It's been great challenging myself every month to create new images for Foodelia Awards. What can I say, a bowl of rice is soul food for any Japanese. Back in the olden days, the Japanese called white rice "Silver Rice”, during the food shortage during and after World War II. I wasn't yet alive in those days, however, admiration for white rice is deeply imprinted in my DNA. That's the reason I can't do a no-carb diet!

Indonesian Traditional Snack Stall. Fascinated with the richness of the traditional snacks in Indonesia, I created a scene resembling a snack stall. I selected the snacks, both sweet and savory, from several regional cuisines to be "sold" here. From the popular ones across the country to ones that can only be found in specific local markets. Textures and colors definitely come into play.

The stall was set up at home; having a Javanese lady dressed in Javanese Batik as the seller. Here she is seen scooping a local Javanese snack called Tiwul (steamed cassava granules) from a snack tray called Lenjongan, which can be found in local traditional markets in Yogyakarta and Surakarta in Central Java.

Affogare is Italian for 'drowning'. In fact, affogato is a delicious dessert, where vanilla ice has been drowned in coffee. So, it is very suitable for capturing the motion of pouring the espresso.

Food styling: Pete May.
Pete gets credited right off the bat with this shot because of the PERFECT prop selection! This old wooden tray reminded me of traveling in India - it's exactly the style of the tray that chai would often be carried around on. The product being hero'd here is a flatbread for making fresh, healthy samosas. Yum!

Local Jewfish Fillet poached in creamy Mussel and Saffron Broth with Braised Leeks, Peas, and Potato. Yes, I captured this photo, but I can’t take full credit for this image. My partner and I own and run a small fine dining restaurant @theloftlismore. We would never have taken this venture on without our incredibly talented head chef and friend Richard Kerr @nimbinchef His skills are off the charts - he’s earned our restaurant a Chefs' Hat for two consecutive years ( Michelin equivalent) and helped put our little country town on the map. For me personally, it’s because is his works of art on a plate that I felt compelled to his food justice with my camera.

There is a brief moment in the afternoon where the harshness of the sun breaks. At that moment the natural Australian sunshine took this photo from ordinary to extraordinary. The perfect balance between the harsh sun and soft sunset provided for a unique visual experience. I was obsessed with the effect of the afternoon rays on the flowing golden maple syrup. It’s not earth-shattering, but At the end “The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.”

A good friend of my father happens to be a Japanese chef here in Jakarta. The food in his Japanese restaurant is pretty authentic. One of my favorites is this tofu dish of Agedashi Tofu. It's deep-fried soft Japanese tofu in a flavourful broth of soy and dashi (Japanese fish stock). Garnished with green onion and katsuobushi (shaved fish flakes)

I had a chance to shoot this delish dish. I styled it with a contemporary bowl, plate, and chopsticks that also go well with Japanese food; then combined those with authentic Japanese teacups.
